I don't understand whereof you speak. I would assume you are not in the
U.S.? Perhaps you could explain a little.

thanks

He's apparently in New Jersey, which is just as bad.

Please forgive my ignorance, but that still doesn't tell me what a 'red
tip' is or what it does - I'm curious.

New Jersey requires a permit to buy and own air guns, and the OP was
complaining about the process and its costs.

Presuamably, he's thinking that by making his pellet gun look like a
toy, he can somehow avoid this.

I see - thanks for the info.

Re: red tip

Here in the police state of NJ we need a firearms ID card to be out with
an air gun or BB gun. These are considered firearm under NJ law. The
state cannot make NJ citizens register their long guns, so for
harassment we get a requirement for a Firearms ID card. The card is free
but the fingerprinting etc costs in excess of $60.00. Under the law you
are required to be granted your card in (IIRC) thirty days if nothing
bad turns up in your background check. That fact notwithstanding,
getting a card usually takes at least six months. The card lets you have
a firearm (long gun) in your possession when you are out and about with
proper reason.

I once saw a guy indicted (in NJ) for having an empty Daisy Red Rider BB
gun locked in his auto trunk. He didn't have a Firearms ID card.

BB pistols and pellet pistols are considered identically to "real"
pistols in NJ law. Possession a pistol when out and about in NJ requires
a permit to carry (even for a BB pistol).

Thanks for the explanation - I had no idea. BTW - I'm in Idaho and have
spent my entire life in the west except the time I was in the Navy during
Vietnam.

Ray,

Take care to see that things never get as bad in Idaho as they are here.

Re: red tip

Let me further explain. I am 62. My backbone is gradually disolving
and sooner or later will be in a wheel chair all the time. Because of
this I take quite a lot of medications. I also have a pacemaker, and
several other problems, but I take several types of codine based
medicine. They will not grant me a liscense because I am basically
sick, although my mind is clear, etc. I just thought that if I could
add some color to my pistol and rifle, no one would question what
I am doing or if I am "legal". I love to shoot and it gives me a
chance (excuse) to go outside once in a while. I basically sit in the
back of my Yukon open the doors and plink, never animals. I have
a strong need to be legal, but I seem to be in a catch 22, I just
didn't know if anyone else had tried the red tip solution. All
airsoft guns, have a red tip which makes them a toy instead (
as if they couldn't put an eye out too). Anyway, I guess there
really is no answer and I'll just do what I do. You can see all of
these guns at PyramidAir. Notice red on tip of airsoft guns. I
didn't even know if I could register in another state or get a permit
on line (like a college diploma). Thanks for at least thinking about
this for me. I am so anal that I only shoot lead free pellets.
By the way I have an alpa rifle and a Beretta FS92.

Thanks for the information. I can appreciate your situation. BTW - just
got a RWS 52 for doing some field target - took it out today to do some
sighting (had done some preliminary work in the basement earlier in the
week). So, anyway, on the first shot I'm concentrating so hard on what I'm
doing that I didn't even check how far I was from the scope - so the
recoil catches me above the eyebrow and starts bleeding like crazy. So off
to the emergency room for five stitches. Well, at least I had the
elevation good at 10 yards, but was still an inch and a half left - I just
hope it was me instead of the scope! I spent about half an hour the other
night trying to get the cross range adjusted.

I am writing from the UK, so forgive me if what I am about to say makes no
sense with your Laws inthe US.

I would have thought you could 1) Ask you wife/buddy/partner to get a
permit, so that the guns where being transported legally, and also if stoped
they could be responsible for the guns. ( I hate to think what the legal
system might do if they caught you
2) Find someone with some land, and plink on their land, and leave the
weapon with them when you finished your session.

As I said above, I dont know if this works with your legal system
