I started after a craze at school in 1991. I wasn't as co-ordinated back
then and it wasn't until the craze died away that I learnt to juggle 3
tennis balls, in January 1992.

Re: what got you juggling?

For me, learning the 3b cascade and starting to juggle were two different
things. I learned the cascade years ago from the Klutz juggling book and
then I moved in New Hampshire in 2003 and met an old hat, Jim Gleich, who
really got me into it and the rest is history.

Clicked onto a site, rolled up some socks, and had a go at it. It took me

poorly written websites. That first night I picked it up, however, I

I learned from Ronald Graham, a well known mathmetician, (I decided to post
when I saw the math reference) in 1972, when Ron continually prodded me to
give it a try. I thought there was no way I could ever do anything like that
and he let me take his equipment home (they were indoor lacross balls, no
bounce). I was amazed that I was able to learn and Ron was a great coax'er
getting Tim Kapp(my next door neighbor and lifetime friend) an I to learn as
much as possible. Ron was very generous with his time and I am very
grateful! My math did not improve.

Re: what got you juggling?

I wouldn't call it starting juggling but I did the classical
learn-on-your-own at 11 years old learning the 3 ball shower from 2 since I
never saw a 3b cascade.
Ten years later saw and learned the 3 ball cascade with no trouble but also
had no idea of how to proceed from there.
Twenty seven years later (last year) I must have seen something on TV,
because I had a desire to buy balls, rings and clubs, but didn't.
A month later I saw a juggler on a cruise ship (Adam Cario? on the
Zuiderdam) - AND I WAS HOOKED !
After purchasing countless rings, balls and clubs and practicing 2 hours a
day, I am finally starting to work on learning the 5b cascade.
Even though I can do 5b splits and stacked multiplexing the 5b cascade is my
ultimate goal. I stuck with and learned the 3b mills mess, takeouts and the
robot, and know that the 5b cascade will have to worked on for quite a
while. I also have a math background and think that I should learn site swap
too.

But I think that the 5b cascade is beautifull !

Originally I received 3 beanbag pyramids back in 91/92 when I was at a
Computer Exhibition in Earls Court and I wanted to enter a building
competition but couldn't, but they nice lady gave me a prize anyway.
Tried to juggle these unsuccesfully (I did do the 2 ball shower like
everyone does).

Picked them up again about 1997 learning the juggling facing a wall over a
radiator. Where it lay again after not much progress.

Then in 2002, I rather shamefully picked up poi and a lil contact juggling
from a friend at sixth form. Learnt staff soon after.

Then I came to University of Bath in 2003, saw a guy promoting the
Juggling society with glow poi, and was hooked on the club since. It
pretty much just followed on from there when I learnt to juggle balls
properly, diabolo lots, and so on so forth downloading video after video
and replying post after post on R.J and diabolo.ca.

Now I'm a lil obsessed.

Short answer, "I cant remember exactly"

Slightly longer answer:

About 24 years ago, I was watching a childrens TV show called
"Playschool" one of the presenters was called Fred. He taught the
viewers a magic trick. I learnt it. So began an interest in magic. [1]

Some time around 5 years later, I remember trying to juggle cricket
balls while I sat out PE due to illness. How or why I got to this point
I'm not sure, but I suspect it grew from the magic interest. Something
is nagging at me telling me I was attempting a 3 ball shower.

My next memory is around christmas 1990 when I remember trying to learn mills
mess one lunchtime at school. One of the "cool kids" in the class
took the piss out of me for dropping - and then eventually showed me how
to do mills mess once his mates had gone. I know it was around then
because I was using mills mess as an excuse to not revise for my mock
GCSEs.

There was a christmas somewhere in the middle where I was given 3
juggling balls, a diabolo and a copy of "the complete juggler" but I
can't remember anything about that other than the props. Presumambly I
learnt a 3 ball cascade shortly after.

Erm, after that it sort of goes:
1993 - started a school juggling club
1994 - My First Bristol. I made it to the last Saturday. It was ace.
1995 - went to Aston uni
1996 - revived the Aston University juggling club and started going to
conventions properly. I think this was the year I first posted to r.j
1999 - graduated, moved to bristol
2000 - got suckered into helping run BJC2K
some point after that I lost interest in juggling and became more
interested in jugglers.
Spetember 2005 - Juggling became interesting again.

I think that covers it. Sorry if I was a bit vague. So much of it was
so long ago!

-Paul
[1] Interestingly, last time I did a table hopping magic gig, I included
that same trick. It was really rather effective.

A craze at school, how and does this occur, how do we make another one
happen? What was it like, was everyone juggling 3 and 4 balls and some
people juggling 5, or were most people at the basic 3 ball level and
amazed by the thought of 5 balls?

I was in 7th grade probably. At the local YMCA I saw the guy behind
the counter juggle three raquetballs for a moment. I was like "how do
you do that!" I got a quick 3 ball cascade lesson and learned it when
I got home. I doubt I ever made it past 50 catches back then. In my
early 20s I came across the Klutz book and worked on it a little more.
Learned reverse cascade and probably got to where I could do 100
catches with three. In my early 30s I discovered juggling on the
Internet and bought some Fergie bags. Learned 3 ball shower, Mills
Mess, 4 balls, and then got frustrated trying 5 and quit again. Last
year at this time I finally committed myself and have juggled pretty
much every day since. I still stink though. ;)

There's not a single other practicing juggler in my town that I'm aware
of, but the other day a new coworker grabbed my bean bags and said he
could juggle a little. He did a rough reverse cascade. He said he
learned it one day in the kitchen with potatoes. I showed him how to
do it the normal way. Maybe he'll go home and practice and I'll have
someone to juggle with.

I'm sure you've noticed crazes at your school, suddenly at some point
everyone has yo-yos, or skateboards, tamagotchi, micro scooters,
pokemon or whatever else is the "must have" toy of the moment.

My nieces school is in the grip of acraze at the moment for something
called "Street Gliders" - http://www.streetgliders.com/ I had a go on
hers the other week, damn near broke my neck.

It's not unusual, there's at least one big boom in *something* per
school year.

How do you make it happen? Erm, you don't. Generally large toy
companies do, or someone fasionable decides it's "cool" to do something
and everyone jumps on the bandwaggon.

It was the early 90's. Someone who could juggle 5 balls was still a
relatively rare sight (Or at least it was in the UK)

I learned a two-ball shower with tennis balls, apples and oranges from
my mother when i was a child.

During my first year in college a friend of mine was in the mall dodging
a class and decided to learn to juggle, just on a whim. He bought a set
of one-piece beard clubs. He soon decided that it would be easier to
learn balls first. We spent that whole summer learning pretty bad
technique because we had no-one to teach us.

Another friend of mine joined a juggling club in college the next year,
so the two of us who had started juggling already joined that too. Even
though neither of us was actually in that college.

I had a very boring job -- REALLY boring.

I picked up three small jars of wood putty and started tossing them
around. It took me forever to learn because I didn't know anybody who
juggled and had to 'invent' juggling all by myself[1].

Over the next twenty-some years, I never really hung out with other
jugglers for any length of time or had a teacher of any sort[2].

Exciting story, eh?

I tried to learn how to juggle during the 5th grade. Every so often my
P.E. class activity would change to a different sport, so then one day
they had a juggling session. For some reason I could never get that 3rd
ball out of my hand, haha. Then during my High School Sophomore year, my
Japanese teacher Matt Hall announced after class that he was starting a
juggling club. With that, I began to go to the club meetings and after 2
meetings or so, I was able to juggle 3 balls. I am currently in my Junior
year, so that means I have plenty of time to learn more about juggling.

I worked at a quiet Burger King in Rashwood near Droitwich, UK nearly 5
years ago now.
I started on those plastic sauce pots with some tuition of a colleague who
claimed to be able to do 2 diabolo for a bit.
I was impressed by some tricks with rolls of bin liners.

One day I walked into work and there was four members of staff on and no
customers.
2 of the staff were blowing up BK balloons inside other BK balloons.
The other 2 staff had managed to make several 'balls' out of the new
caesar wraps, squashed up, and wrapped in cling film.

I quickly set about getting changed, and learning some basic passing
patterns, writing signs for the customers ("will customers please refrain
from taking the piss out of the staff as they got enough of it at school")
and smoking pipes out the fire exit.

Can't remember the guy's name who taught me but do you read this thing?!

I read that as the mouse had stilts and you wanted to try them out. Hard

In 8th grade i saw my friend matt juggle three clubs.
looked fun but if i remember correctly he wouldn't let me try his clubs.
5 years later we were roommates.
I lost my job because the company i worked for was
"trimming the fat of the corporation" and i had about two weeks worth of
living money so i decided it
was a good time to learn to juggle.
I asked matt to show me how to juggle again.
he was like, "just throw them all in the air then just keep doing that".
to get better i was supposed to try 'eggs' because i "wouldn't drop them"
I ended up practicing with golf balls (on a cement floor with cats who
like golf balls) and when that got
pretty solid I practiced with the grates off of the stove (outside).
Later I got 3 hackysacks and learned
some tricks.

i don't remember why i wanted to juggle , but i do remember me being
little ( 'bout 8 years ) and i too had 3 pairs of socks ...
so i practiced upstairs to juggle it and when i could do it a little, i
went downstairs to show my dad (who didn't really had a lot of time).
so i juggle 3 pairs of socks ( so , practically clubs , but floppy clubs
:p )
and my dad said : " uhu " and left ...
so i stopped juggling .
then in a school project, when i was 11, they taught me to juggle with 3
balls and then i started to practice it.

i kept on juggling till i got to the 5b cascade , got stuck , and
stopped...
then a year later i started juggling again , because neighbours asked my
dad if i could do a performance...

i started surfing on the web for more tricks , found out there was a
jugglingclub nearby , went there, practiced, practiced more , and some more

right now i'm 15
( yes , i'm a big boy now :p )

Re: what got you juggling?

Terribly had I my right ankle sprankled one and half year ago.
Sitting and lying bed for months,,,
nearly bored to death.

I found golf balls in a drawer.
Starting 2 in right hand,,, and 2 in left hand,,,

and then i want 3. but i don't know how.
the word "juggling" striked.
searching it in the internet.

I really thank the golf balls.

My husband taught my son & I for a talent show. They are WAY WAY better
than me, but I can still juggle!

God Bless,

somewhere around 3rd grade my parents bought me the Klutz juggling book as
sort of a random present. for some reason i felt compelled to actually
learn it, and about a week later or so i could juggle. i didn't take it
much farther than the 3b cascade or 2 in one hand until about 7th or 8th
grade when i found out a friend of mine could juggle a little. just to
out-do him (though i was already slightly better) i learned 4 (was fairly
solid with 2 in one hand now, so it was fairly easy) and my friend made me
learn the 3 ball shower because he couldn't do it but thought i could. it
wasn't until about freshman year in high school that i even began to take
it "seriously". i learned 5 balls during sophmore year in about 2 months
or so, and then kinda slowed down a bit because my friend moved away. i
still juggled, but rarely everyday for an hour or so like i had been
doing. i slowly got better, and during my senior year i made the trek up
to the USDJ club (about 4 hours for me) and learned to pass, and was
hooked even worse than before. it's now a year and a half later and i'm up
to 7 balls, working on 5 clubs, and passing. :)

I live in florida And at one point we had about 3 or 4 bad storms in a
row, this resulted in having no power for up to 3 weeks... during this
time
you can get very bored and have nothing to do, so i picked up 3 rolled up
pairs of socks and learned to juggle. I got pretty good at 3 ball cascade
by the time we got power back. The thing was i no longer cared about
power, all i wanted to do was juggle. so i bought myself some juggling
balls and look at me now..... I CANT STOP
