Handy Dandy Personal Urban Survival kit

Revised due to improvements in technogology

Handy dandy carry on your person personal urban survival kit:

1.Cell Phone
2.Pepper spray
3.Ball point or Fountain pen
4. Knife folding lock back 3 to 4" blade- can be opened with one hand (
Cold steel, Spyderco, Bench made - good quality)
5. Knife same as above except small 2" blade carry in other pocket
6. Small flash light - ( Surefire) usually worn on belt
7. Pistol 45 lightweight w/extra mag. Worn on belt w/ inside the pants
holster.
8. Pistol Ruger LCP 380 weighs 10.5 oz as a backup pistol.
Note: if concealment is an issue and only one pistol can be carried then
look at Rohrbaugh R9 ( 9mm) w/ extra mag. Smallest 9mm pistol made and a
real quality item.
If concealment is still an issue then look at the Ruger 380 as a primary
pistol and not a backup.
Got any items you would like to add?

What about stop being a heartless bastard to your fellow men and
nobody will come and kill you?

Also, you don't need Homeland Security if you don't fuck people around
overseas.

What color is the sky on your planet?
Here on Earth, there are people who are just plain nuts. You can be the
nicest guy around, and someone might just come up and kill you because,
well, you looked funny (which you do, by the way).

Depends on the phone. Some phones have direct-connect capability that
will work regardless of the grid. You're not going to make any long
distance calls with it, but it'll get you 911 service and keep you in
touch with family members who also have direct-connect service.

Satellite phones are another option. Ham radio is even better.

Like any weapon, the effectiveness depends on how you use it. The
foaming version is better; it's easier to aim, less chance of
blowback, and it often freaks people the hell out in addition to the
pain. Also great for dealing with dogs.

9. Portable Ham radio. There are operators all over the place who
can operate independant of the power grid, and in most regions of the
US there are already networks in place to deal with wide-scale
disasters. The only drawback is that you need to get a license. Ham
operators are almost universally helpful. Came in very handy during
the east coast power outage a few years ago.

9.b If you're not into the whole licensing thing, just having a small
CB radio you can carry isn't a bad idea. Chances are if there is a
crisis, the open channels will be monitored. Some police departments
still monitor citizens bands regardless.

10. First aid kit. Bandages, antiseptics, sterile needle and thread
for wounds; the basics. I keep one in each of my cars, and I have a
small one that I can carry on me if necessary.

potato, po-tah-to. With a 9mm you can have 45 rounds on your person
plus a couple of extra mags in your BOB giving a whopping 75 rounds in
a lightweight carry. Not to mention the 5 in your wheelgun and 10
more in the bullet pouch in your left rear pocket.

The only time the grid is even touched is when trying to use it over
long distance. Otherwise, the connection works just like a walkie-
talkie.

Satellite phones are great; I used mine from work all during the 2003
blackout, and there was no noticable difference in service. I also
used mine on 9/11 and the days following; again, no noticable
difference.

Satellite phone !=3D cell phone.

Actually I would be bringing a gun and a knife. But frankly, in many
cases (close range) I would use the knife.

Conversely, you could just be a good shot and not need to have 90
rounds on you. In all seriousness man, if it ever gets to the point
where that much ammo is even a consideration, I'll be carrying an
AR-15 as my primary. Burst enabled.

A cell phone, even an un-activated one, is one of the most useful,
helpful, items a person can have with them/in a first aid kit. That
applies even in a blackout.

Most 911 call centers have their own back-up generators. (People still
have heart attacks, fires, etc. even when the power is out.) All cell
phones can connect to 911, even if they are un-activated and can not make
any other calls. It is illegal for a cell-service provider to block a 911
call for any reason. And before (or after) the grid goes down, a cell
phone works a hell of a lot better than just screaming for help. Fire
Dept.s, Ambulances, and even Cops don't respond to well to people just
screaming for help.

In many places, concealed carry of a firearm is illegal. A collapsible
baton and/or a taser or stun-gun might be a carry-legal alternative.

Except, in some states, even pepper spays and often stun-guns/tasers are
illegal for civilians. In those locations, a collapsible baton might be
the only carry-legal alternative.

Good points. However, where firearms, pepper sprays, stun guns are illegal
I strongly suspect the collapseable baton is likely illelegal also. Perhaps
improvised or something that can serve as weapons will have to fill the
bill here. Like perhaps a carpenters belt with hammers and screwdrivers.
Just keep some kind of a project going at home. Otherwise you are a grass
eater.

I'd like to take a bunch of items away; seems like a whole lot of crap
to lug around. Mainly I'm wondering, do you really need two knives,
and two guns, in addition to pepper spray? I think one each would do,
if you're really concerned. After all, how often do you ever actually
_use_ this stuff? You're piling up the 'insurance' well past
reasonable precautions, imho.

flashlight - yeah they are good, but its still more crap to hang off
your belt or put in your pockets. Unless you were wanting it as a
kubotan or light-attack weapon ... but you've already got a steel pen,
2 knives, 2 guns and pepperspray.

Lately I've seen there's a couple wrist-watches out now with
integrated flashlights, i reckon that would be pretty cool way to
carry it. If you have a spare $300, check this beauty out: The Swiss
Army Night Vision Watch

http://www.wristdreams.com/archives/2005/02/swiss_army_nigh.html

I certainly do go through phases where I want to be like batman,
carrying around a hip-sack or satchel full of gadgets. Right now I'm
fairly minimalist: just a phone, knife, and keychain light suits me.
But I have a very safe lifestyle and locale, its all a lot less
serious to me.

You cannot always have your weapons drawn to prevent nut attacks.

If a nut suddenly stabs you in your back, all those survival gear you
are hauling around won't be able to help you.

As a matter of fact, Canada joined the U.S. in the continuing invasion
and occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq. We are your partner in crime.

Yeah, well, that's true, but if I stop being a heartless bastard (like
you've stopped beating your wife), nut jobs may still come, no matter what.
