Punishing a stupid kid

So after ten months of parking my bike without locking it up, some
stupid kid decided to steal my odometer. It's one of those fancy cat-
eye digital deals that does everything - even calories. It's worth a
pretty penny, about half the cost of my bike.

Unfortunately for the thief, this kid was caught by three high quality
color cameras- frontal on the approach, from the side snatching it,
and from behind casually walking away. Hi definition, baby. We know
what school the kid goes to, we know how tall, we have a face, we even
have the student id number from the front of the shirt.

In a city like this, this never happens. An elite school student
stealing from a foreigner? Front page news. The kid is going to be
scared shitless. Her school opens at 8:30am on Monday and I'm gonna be
there. We have pictures and video. I almost feel sorry for her, since
when the parents find out that kid is probably going to get beaten
unconscious.

Any ideas on how I should play this? Man that kid is in so much shit -
lol - it's totally different here. In Toronto the police would laugh
something like this off, would have given me some kind of bullshit
platitude and moved on. But here, hmm, there will probably be mugshots
and posters, even though the kid is likely 10 or 12. I'm wondering if
I should show up with the police or just have her kicked out of
school. My wife says it's probably legal if I beat the shit out of her
but that I should have a policeman with me to make sure I don't step
over the line and kill her.

Any thoughts?

Actually, if you look carefully, he says "when the parents find out",
intimating the parents will do this. (he *does* talk about beating her
up for a ten bit item later, but not in the area you quoted)

Oh, mike is replying to my post? Didn't see it, I'm on the comp I
killfiled him on. Yes, that is precisely right Pboud, I did mean that
the parents will be doing it, that's pretty much standard practice
here.

In response to mike's ridiculously dense question however.. No.. I'm
not going to beat the kid up while a cop is watching - Lol. I mean
come on. Oh well - even after all this time, Mike still manages to
surprise me at times with these kind of obtuse questions. I guess I
still haven't decided if he's playing stupid or if he really doesn't
get it o_O

On the "cop stand and watch" bit..

Navy crews get standard briefings on foreign port do/don't lists... One
area of memory was 'don't mess with anyone's wife' (to a sailor? wow..
I'd never have guessed that being a possibility..) since the local laws
allowed the husband a gun, 9 bullets, and from morning until noon to do
whatever he wanted to you.

So, Not sure what the local regs are, but depending on local morality,
it could very well be possible the police officer wouldn't react as we
(North American 'we' here..) would usually expect. (can't speak for
Aus/Eu, but I'd assume the same general position as N/A)

Personally, I would ask for my property back, an apology, and her word
that it will not happen again. If she gives me these, and hasn't had
a history of this sort of thing, let it go at that. What is getting
the crap kicked out of her going to accomplish?

Ten to twelve years old is all the more reason to let it go. Kids
that age make mistakes; if things there are as you say, chances are
just knowing she is caught will put enough fear into her to serve as a
lesson. Do you really need to involve the police or the school?

Dude, seriously - ask for your property back and an apology. If you
can limit the consequences to that, do so. There really isn't
anything to be gained from abusing a twelve year old over a moment of
weakness. If you have reason to believe that she has a problem, speak
to her parents.

> I'm wondering if I should show up with the police or just have her kicked out of
> school.

You speak as though you would enjoy it... You are talking about a
little girl who made a mistake. I'm all for punishing crime, but at
twelve years old there is a limit to what that punishment should be.
Do you really want to see a little girl get the crap kicked out of her
over this? Do you really want to see her thrown out of school? Do
you really want to see her arrested?

> My wife says it's probably legal if I beat the shit out of her

Are you saying that the thought of beating the shit out of a little
girl has actually crossed your mind? That you've actually considered
it to be an option; and that "stepping over the line" and killing her
is actually part of that thought process? And you wife actually
joined you in this line of thinking?

I sincerely hope that you are kidding about that.

If you continue to look carefully, he says "My wife says it's probably
legal if I beat the shit out of her but that I should have a policeman
with me to make sure I don't step over the line and kill her."

Anyone who would even *think* this way is beyond pathetic. I don't
care if he's joking about it, I don't care if he's just speculating; I
don't even care if he's just puffing his little chest. Anyone who
would even raise the notion of beating up a little girl and mention
stepping over the line and killing her, is beyond pathetic.

Yes, it's a new low even for renli. That's why I posted such an
innocuous response (basically saying "what").

That he just used my response as a means to insult me makes me wonder

He's a loser because he thinks that someone talking about killing a

I was just pointing out the clerical inconsistency.. this *is* RMA after
all.

First off..
With *this* example, I'm pretty much on your side of things based on the
incident; it was minor, and should be dealt with that way.

Moral considerations aside (and I say this simply because the imposition
of morality from one culture on another has led to massive idiocy, and I
don't have enough details on the culture to understand how they would
react to this situation), there was a story in the paper about a group
of 12 and 13 year old girls who swarmed and beat a woman unconscious..
When the woman's 17 year old son tried to help his mom out, they knocked
him out as well.

Another story we've got is a curfew on anyone 12 to 18 in a local area
to keep down gang violence after a drive-by shooting injured a 2 year old.

Private schools (civilian, military, whatever) all have their version of
'lord of the flies' going on to some degree or another (I can attest to
the military side, at least) and this is not only not frowned upon or
reported, it's usually accepted and sometimes even condoned.

I won't bother commenting on the above example, since petty theft is
just that.. petty.

Doing a blanket statement based on age however ignores way too many
factors. Gangs are *specifically* recruiting at the 12 and below age in
Canada because 12 and under (if mem serves) simply cannot be charged..
not even under the juvenile code, which (I think) starts at 13. (Can
Lawyer around to clarify that one?)

For heavens sake... he's got the goods on the kid, why not merely take
the video, show it to the parents, handle it privately.... and be a man.
A man, not a thug, not a fool, not a troll.....

Just once Oliver....
beating up an 11 yr old. Laughing at the beating the child will undergo

the child a lesson that it won't forget... with any of that.

That's Oliver, and I'm not saying this to preen, or troll or use it, but
for this: leave the kid alone you bully, Oliver.

A grown man ought to know better.... and you don't.

Don't take this but as a chance to maybe not be so dense and improve
yourself, and maybe, not hurt a naughty child.

Mind you, I'm not against corporeal punishment if appropriate, but here,
Oliver has the goods and can deal her utterly fatal embarrassment
without so much as waving a hand..... and yet, that's where his level
takes him.... smacking a child and having to be restrained by another adult.

No shit - although there are a number of things you don't understand
for being who you are / what you are, I guess - one, we're going to
have to go to her school to locate her which means everyone is going
to know about it anyways. Unless you think they're just going to give
out the name and address of little girls to any foreigner who walks in
off the street. Second point, if we went to her parents privately,
given the situation, they would probably try to offer us money, which
is probably illegal. They would feel a lot of pressure to pay us to
somehow keep this out of the papers. Third, if the police somehow do
get involved, she is definately old enough to be arrested here and
this sort of thing will warrant jail time. Fourth, it is ALMOST
considered legal to beat the shit out of your kids. Even me, as a
teacher in highschool, I have the right.. no sorry the encouraged DUTY
to whip the shit out of students who piss me off with items such as
"the cane", although a number of items are used, one of my favourites
is a piece of bamboo wrapped up with some sort of tape to hold it
together because it's been turned to straw from repeated whippings.
There's a flat stick from korea with some cool korean words on it,
stings pretty bad. In one classroom the students rebelled and stole
the stick so the teacher took two glue sticks (for glue guns) and used
elastic bands to hold them together. Once I whipped my leg with it in
class to demonstrate to the students I meant business. Big mistake, I
felt the blood flow in my leg reverse from the hit and my leg just
didn't feel *RIGHT* for the rest of the day. But I digress.

Well, at least there isn't any real crime here. Just people spitting
on the ground, thats about it. Like I said, this kind of thing never
happens.

Well I was considering it but that's part of what makes it perfect -
within it's element it shows restraint, and therefore taste.,

You might not have noticed but I actually avoided mentioning the sex
or age of the child until late in the post and then only sparingly, as
an aside. This is quality work, trav. Just look at the hate and
blindless pouring out of ppl like shuurai and mark goldberg. Dunno -
maybe they'll wake up this time?

Hate? I didn't see any hate. Maybe some of us were misled by your
pathetic attempts at attention, but there was no hate directed at you.

Riiight. He knows, you are *joking*. You put together a multi-
paragraph post ranting about how you were *gonna show* a 10 yearl old
girl!

What's your next *joke*?

Oh, I get it. *You* are the joke. As always...

Next time make her 15 and have it be your wife's idea. The knock on
arguments from that over sex, marriage, and morality would quickly
spiral.

The sad thing is, Ollie - I don't know that you were joking. Even now
I'm not so sure you were joking. And you know what? Even if you
*were* joking it still makes you a piece of shit. What kind of a
grown man jokes about beating a little girl to death over a fucking
toy?

You are nothing more than a little punk. A little two-bit nothing,
desperate for attention. And deep down, you know it as well as anyone
else.

Yes, *that* is why you are a loser.

Because it doesn't matter if it's a joke or not, you're an asshole,
and you're proud of it.

Yeah. Go get your freaking odometer back and forget the rest. If crime

Exactly. But in this case, what do you think about (for example) her
getting her picture on the front page of the local newspaper, kicked
out of school, and her parents beating the crap out of her?

> Are you trolling?

No, but the part about me killing her while a cop watches is clearly a
joke, you SHOULD be able to get over it without me having to go into
detail about it in this way. Yes, it's kind of obvious that I am not
going to be killing a little girl for stealing an odometer while a cop
watches me do it. I mean come on Kirk. There are MUCH more interesting
quesitons that we could entertain besides "am I trolling".

So - who cares about the rest? Well, the concept of underage crime and
how it's dealt with, and the resulting low crime rate - is interesting
to say the least. As I've mentioned before there is no violent crime
where I live, no drugs, not even any graffiti. So I think a lot of
people would care. I think this way is better, even though there are
some negative things which go along with it, the truth is that there
are far more negative things in the canadian way. It's like saying
ooh, if I take this medicine I will feel nauseous so you don't want to
take it - but if you don't, you'll die. It's that kind of medicine.
Dunno - was just looking for opinions.

Yes, as a citizen of Canada I know all about that. But you're telling
me you've never gotten "the belt" or "the cane"?

Keep in mind, that it's a different culture here, and the quickest way

It isn't "beating them up", Peter. It's hitting their hand with a

These children are not your kids, any issues of loco parentis aside.

If other parents want to use corporal punishment on their kids, I believe that's
their choice, and I don't agree with govt intervention, outside of obvious abuse
of course.

My father did not hit me, nor do I hit my children.

Do you hit yours?

But hitting OTHER PEOPLE'S KIDS?

Get outta here....it's NOT ON.

You do it, and you seem to derive just enough pleasure from it to make me wonder

That's right, and at my high school, the cane was dished out more often than hot
food.

Fuck that shit. If you're a teacher and you can't control your students without
hitting them, you have no right to be a teacher. Period.

Peter - word to the wise - it's rather plodding and stupid to keep
pushing this angle, it's kind of obvious I'm not going to be doing
that. It was nearly self-evident from the OP, and it's been said
several times now.

So you were a good kid - the point is, you grew up in that
environment. So how do you feel about today's environment where
standing in the corner is regarded as cruel and unusual? Around here,
"light punishment" is kneeling on a stone floor for several hours.

Well, maybe - but that's the environment you grew up in too, and
nowadays things are very different, aren't they?

Well that's the difference between you and me. If you hit one of my
kids, you *would* be dead. ;-)

I think you're just taking this too seriously, if you would relax a
little it would go in a lot smoother.

I'm not the one practically bursting over the prospect of seeing a
little girl get the shit kicked out of her for stealing a toy. What
exactly did you expect by posting this story?

Right. It doesn't matter if it's a joke or not, because no decent
person would joke about beating a little girl to death over a toy. No
decent person would gloat over her possibly being beaten by her
parents, or going to jail.

I'll admit, if someone other than you had posted this they might be
granted some more benefit of the doubt; but then, the chances of
someone other than you actually posting something this are pretty
small.

Yes, it is, because you said you would never hit your own kids. You
seem to think it's morally wrong (correct me if I didn't understand
what you said). You asked me if I hit my own kids. You said if I hit
your kids you'd take revenge (in such a case probably a good thing to
do on your part). So yes, it IS the issue - if you didn't notice it is
the main issue I was trying to bring out. What is acceptable
punishment? How would YOU punish your kids, Peter? For the most
serious of offenses? Say, random petty theft? If your kids were 10.

There's something in it for me, too, yes - I'll gain wisdom as a
parent. As of yet my child is too young to be punished ( not even 1
year old). I'll learn something from it all, of course. Now, I wonder
which of the deadbolts will accuse me of being self-serving ;-)

Hit? What does this mean, to hit? A slap on the wrist? A hard punch to
the kidneys, or perhaps breaking someone's nose? We should define the
terms, Peter, since you seem to be implying I am injuring a student.
Nothing could be further from the truth, so we should define the
terms. Anyways - as I've said something like seven or eight times by
now I won't be hitting anyone. So maybe it isn't even important to
define the terms.

See, this is the problem. You're being obtuse. You know bloody well it
isn't that serious - not from a reading of the action but from your
interpretation of what the action is. Surely, after all this time, you
don't think I am even so much as leaving a mark on anyone. Mostly
because I don't really (ahem) "hit" students, Peter.

But damn, the principal of your school must have been such a stupid
and evil man for caning so many students who didn't deserve such
treatment. Hmm.

Lol, you just fucking told me what environment you grew up in within
the context of this discussion, Peter. Take a step back, you're
starting to go off the deep end again.

Hmm, I went and looked at every post I made above this one - I don't
see where I said I hit students with bamboo sticks. Pay very close
attention now. I said I hit myself to show them I meant business, and
you jumped in like the fuckwad you are with your assumptions. I don't
hit students peter, if I did I wouldn't have hit myself to make them
shut up.

I don't know - you claim to be a pretty intelligent fellow - do you
get it now? Or do I need to tell you a seventh time?

I don't need to watch out, Peter.

You OTOH need to take a step back and stop making so many assuptions.
I know why you WANT it to be true - but it just isn't - and by forcing
it into an issue you're embarrassing yourself. Anyways let's say no
more about this, I have no wish to sully your good name here. If you
don't wish to talk about the central issues i've brought up, I quite
understand, but by the same token I won't be entertaining this
bantering crap from you anymore either ;-)

I will repeat. You are a pitiful seeker of attention most likely because
you simply cannot get enough. That's all that fuels you. And you brag
about your lapses because you don't have the moral fiber to deal with
what you lack, and thus merely preen about how your testing the waters.

Well, I don't know what makes your wife tick but she seems to know you.
And for the record, what I'd do, would be something like this.

I'd go to the parents, and tell them what happened, and about the tapes.
I would suggest, please, that they do nothing to the child but rather,
let you handle it. In front of the child, I would show the video, and
tell them that they are a thief, who has been caught. I would insist on
gettting the device back from them, and that they have made a grave
error and would now have to pay for their stealing.
I would, if it was me, tell the child, that I was going to make the her,
do manual labor, paint my house, fix my fences, whatever- until the
costs of the thievery is paid off.

The child would be spared a beating, spared public humiliation but
forced to work their time to pay for the act of theft. Then, a man...
not you, but a man, might be able, if they were capable or up to it, to
teach some valuable lessons, to that child. That's where education comes in.

I don't know if I'm that man, or would be, but the opportunity to teach
a child or another human being, comes when one is honest with oneself
and can ask, 'do I have something to show this one, or don't I'?

I would hope, that perhaps, if a certain friendship and understanding
arose after much of the labor was accomplished, by the child, I might be
able to pat them on the back and say...'you've worked very hard and not
complained.''now, you may have my odometer, and you may keep it knowing
you've paid the price and earned it, little one...'

'And remember... now, you've earened this with your sweat, your efforts,
your hard work.' 'A beggar begs, but a thief is just a beggar with no
character, who takes what isn't their's, and possibly harms others
who've perhaps struggled to obtain things in this world.

You have a choice now, to be a thief, to be looking over your shoulder
at being caught, like a sneak, a thief always does, or to be a strong
person- one who has no need to be ashamed for what they've struggled to
obtain.

You may succeed in getting many things, or you may only be able to
obtain a few- but to not have to look over your shoulder, like a sneak,
is a fine enough accomplishment in this world.

It's called strength. It will carry you thru this world thru many
difficulties and give you even more strength to accomplish even more
than you can imagine.

Then I'd give the child a gift....

Now you.... you're a big windbag renli. You're a selfish guy, who brags
and brays and plays with his words, and has so little depth, it's scary.

And shame on you, for your shallowness, and vapid thoughts about this
lost child.

I do - but not from you. You have nothing to offer except criticism
without advice. And if you want to know why I am taking your post here
seriously and not the previous one - it is short, to the point, and
registers about 1/10 on the goldberg scale.

Figure it out.

This thread displays you at your best.
Fake, real, it doesn't matter... it's your best.

And it's revolting. That poor kid, who might've had someone bring her,
to a better understanding, a lesson, has instead.... such as you.
Whether it's real or not, you're the pitiful example, by your own words,
of what she has in store.

I feel for the kid.

That child, has instead of someonewho might bring her out of her errors,
one, you... with no heart, no sense, and only the incessant need to
preen, and play at life.

Don't waste your time being mad at others, who have critiqued you in

merely harp, harangue and pretend.

Maybe, you'd become a different kind of person....
