Question about scheduling races

Hi all. I'm a fairly new and still slow runner. I've done 15 or so
5K's and my long runs are now up to about 8-9 miles. I'm planning on
doing my first 10K in a few weeks. There are a couple of races coming
up this fall that I'd like to do. One is a 15K in late October and
one is a half-marathon in late November. If I do the 15K, will I
have ample recovery time available to do the half a month later?
Thanks for your help. Jack

Shouldnt be a problem. if it is, then spread them out
mor next time.

I'd recommend a 13 mile trainign run before the half marathon.

Great. Thanks much. I plan on working up over the summer/early fall
to 15 miles before the half, but since I've never fun half that far
yet, I was concerned about the time needed to recover. Thanks again.

Yes, that's plenty of time. I'd recommend racing fairly frequently (say twice
a month or so)

Cheers,

I've had both good and bad experiences running races close together.

Last spring I had a very bad race for my first half-marathon and I
think what happened was that I was teetering on the brink of over-
training and a 5-mile race a month before pushed me over the edge. I
tried to push on with my training after the 5-miler and didn't allow
for any recovery and suffered badly in the half-marathon.

On the other hand I think doing a couple of 10Ks early this winter
really helped prepare me for my first marathon in the late winter and
a half-marathon in early spring. I've essentially given up doing
formal speedwork and instead run shorter distance races during
training for longer distances. So far that approach seems to be
working for me.

Maybe you could sign up for both races and see how you feel in the
fall. You can always treat the 15k as a training run if you don't feel
then that you're up for two races in close succession, although I
suspect by then that you'll be fine doing both as full races.
