At least it allowed me to slow down and do a little trail maintenance today. Took my shears and cut the spring branch overhang that was causing me to bend to miss it. Got a couple of miles cleaned up, couple more to go. Corinth Coca Cola classic 10K this Saturday, if the back can handle it. Good running all. Frank |

The knee continues to slowly improve, and I'm doing some more specific rehab exercises. It feels ok to boulder and run a bit, though the joint integrity isn't there for run training yet. The goal is to continue along the same lines mixing in more bits of running over the next month to where I can start to do short runs. This was the worst injury I've ever had, and it's been quite an eye opener. -Tony |

| Re: Training Week Ending April 27, 2008 |
Last week was so slow and dissapointing I didn't bother posting it. Something like 64 miles, but absolutely no zip on any day. 1.5 minutes/mile slower than pre-sickness. This week I decided to re-enter the tennis world. I was about a level 5.5 player prior to starting to run in my late 20's, and haven't hit a ball in 7-8 years. My last tournament trophy is circa 1994, egad, time flies! Seems a shame to let a highly developed skill atrophy, so when one of my trading buddies asked me to hit with him, I dusted off the old racket. I finally feel like I might be coming around on the endurance front. That 6 weeks of illness really took it out of me. Mon: 2 very easy. Played tennis 1st time in 7 yrs y'day, Lt. hamstring very sore. Tue: 11.0 tempo route, could only manage 80% of normal time. Wed: 0 Yesterday's run so awful, took day off. Served 300 balls in PM. Thu: 11.0 "Tempo" run, hey, only 10% slower than before woo hoo! Fri: 6 easy at 05:00 (o-dark hundred) on the quiet streets of LA. Sat: 16, 3100' in Griffith park. Felt almost normal for a Saturday long run.** Sun: 7 easy, 1500' climb Echo mtn and beyond a bit. Felt really good. Tennis after. 53 ish, 9300' climb. Hope to get it up to 65 or so next week. **About halfway through my 16 miler, I stopped for water and another runner, a very fit and trim younger guy, showed up at the same time. I took off as he was refilling his bottle. I took off down a 1.2 mile downhill at a good clip, probably 6:15 or so. If he were to catch me, he'd have to move pretty fast. After two or three minutes I heard very quick steps approaching. He'd have to have run close to 5:00 pace to catch me so soon, and fast cadence + high speed = elite. As he passed me I picked it up a bit and chatted with him, giving him the 20 question treatment. Yes he races some, recently ran 2:34 at the Mexico City marathon (outstanding given the elevation is 2240m, 7350'). I asked him what his PR was, and he said, "well years ago I ran a 2:11" (!). He's 42 and weighs 152 lbs now, as opposed to 130 in his prime. Take heart, Steve Common! Unfortunately, I forgot his name, something like Rubin Acosta. He runs those Griffith park hills every Saturday. He slowed down a bit for me ("no problem, my legs are dead today") and we chatted about old times. We raced many of the same trail races 20+ years ago, when he was 18-20 and I was in my early 30's, and compared notes. Very nice guy. He definitely got me running faster for a few miles. After I left him at his car, I continued my run at a more sedate pace. |

Training Week Ending April 27, 2008 A complete disaster. I am mentally skipping this week . Kick out that data -- aberration! Mon: weights Tue 3.5 miles easy Wed bad allergies day? . . . weights Thu sick - head cold Fri sick - yeah, Sat blah blah blah Sun Thought about running . . . So obviously no race Sunday. Ah well. Can't be helped now. Plans: I want to think of the next several months as Half Marathon training, but I haven't really put together a schedule. I want to improve (vs. last year) my 5K, 10K, 15K times at the club races. And maybe a 25K on trails that doesn't involve learning to scale sheer cliffs -- if such a thing exists? -- Daniel ( deltaechomike@usa.net ) |

So far, I'm first in the 50-59 AG, so I need to hit as many of these as possible. Still want to do ultra and or marathon next fall/winter. Mon: 4.5 mi on treadmill, ~10:00 pace. Low 80'sF, but tired. Tue: 5.0 mi on tread. 9:36 pace. Felt a little perkier today. Wed-Fri: Observing run at telescope. No running. Hope we found an exoplanet! Pretty tired, it sure is harder to stay up all night than it was when I was a kid! Sat: 7.55 mi, some outside, some on tread. Very stiff in calves, I assume from all night sitting the last few days. Did a very long stretching session after, it helped a lot. Sun: 5.52 mi @ 9:11 pace. MUCH better! Total: 22.57 mi (eek) Teresa in AZ |

Hmm I might have to bring an insulated pack with a frozen liter bottle of water to keep em cold like I did on that ROGAINE one time - packed a frozen 2 liter bottle into a pack lined with a closed cell sleeping pad and packed a 12 pack in there. A blazing hot day made quick work of that though but luckily they were still cold enough to get down at 6am when my partner decided to take a nap. Then it was actually a blast trying to navigate to the next checkpoint after 4 at dawn - and I actually nailed the checkpoint! - only to be bitten in the ass when we discovered we had to haul ass up the mountain to the finish area, which was a literal nightmare for an hour for me. -Tony |

Ok lets get the facts here!!!! I was running constantly and have had for the whole race and this pic is from ~19,99 km. I have taken in a few runners the last ~6-8 km and no one have taken me and here at the last few km I just heard a pack comming racing from behind; didn't bother looking because I did what I could and no one from behind could make me run faster anyway.... This young guy is 18 years old and outpaced me with 28 sec on the last 1,1 km!!!!!!! He did the last 1.100 m in 3.41!!! But I did the same 27 years ago LOL martin > > Anthony. |

A bit of googling reveals that young Martin is an orienteerer. IMHO what appears to be a rather extreme heel landing in one pic could be a simple misstep; the other two photos of bib number 596 would seem to show a more normal foot strike. In any case he has a quite good "paw- off" and leg extension (as he would have to in order to leave the older Martin eating his dust). (BTW their 10K splits were 37:43 and 39:25...) Anders |

I've done steeper stuff, including bits of the alps (on roads) on my MTB. The thing is, with my MTB (which has 3x7 gears and I guess has the standard gear ratios) I could always gear down sufficiently to go easy, apart from very few super-steep bits. But my road bike requires me to get off the seat after 10%. As for 'steep or long enough to climb dancing out of the saddle', I cannot do more than 5-10 minutes of that, and then not too many consecutive efforts (perhaps 5-6?). Better gear down and stay on the seat. I think the race on saturday consisted of 10 or so 100-200m climbs. After a few spirited attempts, I started giving up earlier and earlier. Clearly, I need more training :) |
