It seized the man by his legs as he trained for a triathlon and he died from his injuries shortly after he was hauled to the beach by rescuers. His death is the first from a shark attack in the city of Solana Beach, a holiday resort about 14 miles north of San Diego, for almost 50 years. The attack off Tide Beach, a favourite spot with surfers, is one of just ten deaths from shark bites in California since records began in the 1950s. It sent a wave of panic along the coastline as beaches were shut for 72 hours. The victim, 66-year-old retired vet Dr Dave Martin, was with a group training for a sports event when he was attacked around dawn, witnesses said. Two swimmers in wetsuits were about 150 yards offshore and 20 yards ahead of the victim when they heard him screaming for help. They turned around and dragged him ashore to a lifeguard station for emergency treatment, but he died at the scene, San Diego county officials said last night. Shark expert Professor Richard Rosenblatt said a 17ft-long Great White almost certainly attacked Dr Martin. "The victim was pushed up out of the water in a violent attack," added Professor Rosenblatt. "That is typical Great White shark feeding behaviour. They attack from below, they make a tremendous, powerful rush and a very powerful bite and then pull away and wait for the prey to bleed to death." Female Great Whites head to southern California at this time of year to give birth before returning north to the colder waters. Swimmers and surfers were ordered out of the water yesterday for a 17-mile stretch amid fears the shark could strike again. Helicopters were also flying over the area looking for what is believed to be a great white. "The shark is still in the area - we're sure of that," said local Mayor Joe Kellejian. George Burgess, curator of the International Shark Attack File at the University of Florida, said: "It was most likely a Great White shark judging by the wounds." Tide Beach is known for a large reef and tidal pools. It is particularly popular with surfers, scuba divers and snorkellers. The drama is reminiscent of the blockbuster 1975 film Jaws, directed by Steven Spielberg, about a New England beach resort terrorised by a rogue Great White shark. Experts said shark attacks are most likely at dawn and twilight, when swimmers in wetsuits can sometimes be mistaken for seals. However, shark fatalities are a rarity in Southern California. Before yesterday, there had been just nine along the entire West Coast, according to the U.S. Fish and Game department. The last fatal shark attack in California was in Mendocino County at Kibesillah Rock in August, 2004. The previous year, a woman in her 50s was attacked while swimming with some seals near a pier at picturesque Avila Beach in Central California. The last fatal shark attack in San Diego was in 1959, when a diver was killed. Overall, shark attacks are rare. There were 71 reported worldwide last year, up from 63 in 2006. It is illegal to take white sharks in California waters. Fish & Game defines "take" as including "hunt", "kill" or even the attempt to kill. There is no provision made for self-defense. Even if he had a weapon, using it against the shark would be in blatant violation of California law and therefore unpatriotic according to Lee Bell and treasonous to Scott. By advocating treasonous behavior, you are clearly an enemy of the U.S. and should therefore be considered an unlawful combatant to be tortured on sight. Watch out! |

About 10 or 12 years ago, there was a story about a guy's Dacshy being grabbed by a Bald Eagle. While the guy's wife took pictures, the bird started to take off. The dude started to throw rocks, and one hit the bird, causing it to drop the dog. The dog had scratchs and was litterally scarred shitless (could be seen in the pictures), but okay. The guy was busted and charged, but the charges were later dropped. |
