| Today's Quotes: |
Today's Quotes: The politicians were talking themselves red, white, and blue in the face. - Clare Boothe Luce, 1902 - 1987 Three groups spend other people's money: children, thieves, politicians. All three need supervision. - Dick Armey The politician in my country seeks votes, affection, and respect, in that order.... With few notable exceptions, they are simply men who want to be loved. - Edward R. Murrow, 1908 - 1965 The trouble with this country is that there are too many politicians who believe, with a conviction based on experience, that you can fool all of the people all of the time. - Franklin P. Adams, 1881 - 1960 The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed - and hence clamorous to be led to safety - by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary. - Henry Louis Mencken, 1880 - 1956 My choice early in life was either to be a piano-player in a whorehouse or a politician. And to tell the truth, there's hardly any difference. - Harry S Truman, 1884 - 1972 -- -- A skilled, armed man lives on a plane of security and contentment different from that of others. The man who cannot cut it, envies, fears and sometimes hates the man who can. -Cooper Popeye/ www.finalprotectivefire.com |

And to tell the truth, there's hardly any > difference. > - Harry S Truman, 1884 - 1972 "Erudition. Dust shaken out of a book into an empty skull." -- Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce (1842-1914) "...The right of self defence is the first law of nature: in most governments it has been the study of rulers to confine this right within the narrowest limits possible. Wherever standing armies are kept up, and the right of the people to keep and bear arms is, under any colour or pretext whatsoever, prohibited, liberty, if not already annihilated, is on the brink of destruction. In England, the people have been disarmed, generally, under the specious pretext of preserving the game: a never failing lure to bring over the landed aristocracy to support any measure, under that mask, though calculated for very different purposes. True it is, their bill of rights seems at first view to counteract this policy: but the right of bearing arms is confined to protestants, and the words suitable to their condition and degree, have been interpreted to authorise the prohibition of keeping a gun or other engine for the destruction of game, to any farmer, or inferior tradesman, or other person not qualified to kill game. So that not one man in five hundred can keep a gun in his house without being subject to a penalty." -- St. George Tucker (1752-1827), American jurist, Blackstone's Commentaries, Book 1, Appendix, Philadelphia, 1803 "The constitutions of most of our States assert that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves in all cases to which they think themselves competent, or they may act by representatives, freely and equally chosen; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed; that they are entitled to freedom of person, freedom of religion, freedom of property, and freedom of the press." -- Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), U.S. President, letter to John Cartwright, 1824 "On every question of construction carry ourselves back to the time when the Constitution was adopted, recollect the spirit manifested in the debates and instead of trying what meaning may be squeezed out of the text or invented against it, conform to the probable one in which it was passed." -- Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) "One loves to possess arms, though they hope never to have occasion for them." -- Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), U.S. President, letter to George Washington, June 19, 1796 "But to prohibit the citizen from wearing or carrying a war arm, except upon his own premises or when on a journey traveling through the country with baggage, or when acting as or in aid of an officer, is an unwarranted restriction upon his constitutional right to keep and bear arms. If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege." -- Wilson v. State, 33 Ark. 557, 560, 34 Am. Rep. 52 (1878) "The next amendment is "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." One of the ordinary modes, by which tyrants accomplish their purposes without resistance, is, by disarming the people, and making it an offence to keep arms, and by substituting a regular army in the stead of a resort to the militia. The friends of a free government cannot be too watchful, to overcome the tendency of the public mind to sacrifice, for the sake of mere private convenience, this powerful check upon the designs of ambitious men. The importance of this article will scarcely be doubted by any persons, who have duly reflected upon the subject. The militia is the natural defence of a free country against sudden foreign invasions, domestic insurrections, and domestic usurpations of power by rulers. It is against sound policy for a free people to keep up large military establishments and standing armies in time of peace, both from the enormous expenses, with which they are attended, and the facile means, which they afford to ambitious and unprincipled rulers, to subvert the government, or trample upon the rights of the people. The right of the citizens to keep and bear arms has justly been considered, as the palladium of the liberties of a republic; since it offers a strong moral check against the usurpation and arbitrary power of rulers; and will generally, even if these are successful in the first instance, enable the people to resist and triumph over them. And yet, though this truth would seem so clear, and the importance of a well regulated militia would seem so undeniable, it cannot be disguised, that among the American people there is a growing indifference to any system of militia discipline, and a strong disposition, from a sense of its burthens, to be rid of all regulations. How it is practicable to keep the people duly armed without some organization, it is difficult to see. There is no small danger, that indifference may lead to disgust, and disgust to contempt, and thus gradually undermine all the protection intended by this clause of our national bill of rights." -- Joseph Story (1779-1845), U.S. Supreme Court Justice, A Familiar Exposition of the Constitution of the United States, 1842 "...All too many of the other great tragedies of history -- Stalin's atrocities, the killing fields of Cambodia, the Holocaust, to name but a few -- were perpetrated by armed troops against unarmed populations. Many could well have been avoided or mitigated, had the perpetrators known their intended victims were equipped with a rifle and twenty bullets apiece, as the Militia Act required here. See Kleinfeld Dissent at 5997-99. If a few hundred Jewish fighters in the Warsaw Ghetto could hold off the Wehrmacht for almost a month with only a handful of weapons, six million Jews armed with rifles could not so easily have been herded into cattle cars. My excellent colleagues have forgotten these bitter lessons of history. The prospect of tyranny may not grab the headlines the way vivid stories of gun crime routinely do. But few saw the Third Reich coming until it was too late. The Second Amendment is a doomsday provision, one designed for those exceptionally rare circumstances where all other rights have failed -- where the government refuses to stand for reelection and silences those who protest; where courts have lost the courage to oppose, or can find no one to enforce their decrees. However improbable these contingencies may seem today, facing them unprepared is a mistake a free people get to make only once. Fortunately, the Framers were wise enough to entrench the right of the people to keep and bear arms within our constitutional structure. The purpose and importance of that right was still fresh in their minds, and they spelled it out clearly so it would not be forgotten. Despite the panel's mighty struggle to erase these words, they remain, and the people themselves can read what they say plainly enough: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. The sheer ponderousness of the panel's opinion -- the mountain of verbiage it must deploy to explain away these fourteen short words of constitutional text -- refutes its thesis far more convincingly than anything I might say. The panel's labored effort to smother the Second Amendment by sheer body weight has all the grace of a sumo wrestler trying to kill a rattlesnake by sitting on it -- and is just as likely to succeed." -- Judge Alex Kozinski, Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, dissenting from denial of rehearing en banc: Silveira v. Lockyer, May 6, 2003 "Trial. A formal inquiry designed to prove and put upon record the blameless characters of judges, advocates and jurors. In order to effect this purpose it is necessary to supply a contrast in the person of one who is called the defendant, the prisoner or the accused. If the contrast is made sufficiently clear this person is made to undergo such an affliction as will give the virtuous gentlemen a comfortable sense of their immunity, added to that of their worth... Appeal. In law, to put the dice into the box for another throw." -- Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce "Still, if you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than live as slaves." -- Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill "When you disarm your subjects you offend them by showing that either from cowardliness or lack of faith, you distrust them; and either conclusion will induce them to hate you." -- Niccolo Machiavelli |

I'm familiar with their M.O. Notice how, after people pointed out that the USA didn't own the moon contrary to what he claimed, our friend Popeye (a.k.a. "within one year WMDs will be found in Iraq") dropped the subject like a hot potato without even a 'oops I was mistaken on this particular subject'? I know that bullying, blustering and personal attacks are their standard answers when faced with unpleasant facts they can't refute. Not to mention the xenophobia fueled by ignorance and contempt of all things foreign. The funny thing is that it is okay for these red blooded chauvinistic American chest thumpers to criticise foreigners and advocate their wholescale destruction but the reverse is considered as unbecoming criminal behaviour!! Yes, you are right I'm not armed. There's no real need for it where I live. I guess there must be something really wrong with the European way of life, you can go around without needing to be armed :-) I'm not saying there is no violence or crime, there is unfortunately, but not on the same scale as the US and that is a good thing. . I hate to trivialize your Usenet coup, but it was a joking excuse to post a funny t-shirt URL. That you were xenophobic enough to search international treaties to refute my grand claim "says more about you that me", as Futile John would say. As far as WMD in Iraq, you were one of the many that could have bet me $1000 that I was wrong, and didn't. What a pussy. And not just that, but, out $1000 bucks, too, for your moral and intellectual cowardice. > I know that bullying, blustering and personal attacks are their > standard answers when faced with unpleasant facts they can't refute. > Not to mention the xenophobia fueled by ignorance and contempt of all > things foreign. > The funny thing is that it is okay for these red blooded chauvinistic > American chest thumpers to criticise foreigners and advocate their > wholescale destruction but the reverse is considered as unbecoming > criminal behaviour!! > Yes, you are right I'm not armed. Or where mobs of youth roam the entire country for weeks burning cars by the thousands, unopposed by terrified authorities. Where racial bigotry, and particularly anti-Semitism, are at an all time high. Where ethnic cleansing and genocide are committed in neighboring countries. -That- European way of life? http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/001/266umtwb.asp > I'm not saying there is no violence or crime, there is unfortunately, > but not on the same scale as the US and that is a good thing. Oh, but it's coming. And we aren't. -- -- A skilled, armed man lives on a plane of security and contentment different from that of others. The man who cannot cut it, envies, fears and sometimes hates the man who can. -Cooper Popeye/ www.finalprotectivefire.com |
