| Social Media for the sport of rowing |
I have been invited to chair a panel for Sport England at an event to be attended by the people who run the major sports in the UK. Details here http://caroe.typepad.com/rebecca_caroe_rowing/2008/04/ever-wanted-to.html Can you help me with answering these questions? What would be a 'perfect' social media outcome for the Olympics in London 2012? How would you ideally like to engage online with the ARA and the folk who run the sport? (include clubs, regatta committees and regional associations as well are national stuff) Where do you go currently to talk about your sporting interests? (online and offline). |

Should anyone be even trying to engineer what will be so much better done by free spirits? Whatever is "official" tends to carry the kiss of death & the stamp of control. > > How would you ideally like to engage online with the ARA and the folk > who run the sport? The medium of communication is rather less important than that (The medium is _not_ the message - apologies to Marshall McLuhan ) > > Where do you go currently to talk about your sporting interests? > (online and offline). Here, of course. But, more to the point, we have real live rowers in & out of the shop & on the phone every day, & we learn a lot in that way. If I have something useful to say to such people, I speak or write a letter. > > Where do you go currently to talk about your sporting interests? > (online and offline). I don't go anywhere. I meet and talk to my friends and fellow oarsmen, past and present. Also of course, I reading, and very occasionally write, here. But I am an old man (vet H) and probably don't understand the modern world nearly as well as you.. Alexander Lindsay |

Guys like me though, except for Republican Harley riders. |

See the Race Matchmaker at: http://www.pengwernbc.co.uk/pages.php/index.html Andrew P.S. I heard a rumour on the towpath that there is going to be an Oyster and Champagne bar of all things! What more could you want? |

Seeing as Talkrowing is down at the moment, my interpretation of a social medium is a PARTY! My perfect outcome. Hmmmmm. Think it might involve Denise Lewis. |

I thought I was having a blonde moment when I failed to understand what "social media outcome" meant. I feel much better knowing that my fellow rowers (a highly intelligent bunch) are equally baffled. I'm not sure about "engage online" either. For me, engaging with someone implies immediate face-to-face communication, not sending a message off into the ether to be received at some time in the future by someone you have never met. As one of the "people who run the sport" (club captain, umpire, coach, Head race secretary, Secretary of ARA Recreational Rowing Working Party), I much prefer to meet people and chat about things. The annual ARA Coaching Conference is also a great forum - believe it or not, the ARA bods whom I know are very nice people and do listen to members' concerns. I talk about my sporting interests: - at the club - at home - in the pub - in the office Caroline |

Wikipwdia on 'Social Media' "Social media can take many different forms, including Internet forums, message boards, weblogs, wikis, podcasts, pictures and video. Technologies such as blogs, picture-sharing, vlogs, wall-postings, email, instant messaging, music-sharing, crowdsourcing, and voice over IP, to name a few." So there you are. Or rather, here we are. I suppose the perfect social media outcome would be no trolling, no spam, no flaming, no top-posting (for Carl), no spam, read your message carefully before pressing Send, no spam, and read the f****** Q&A Dave h |

ITYM under ARA rules. I'm 27 and quite eligible for veteran events here in Scotland (and indeed anywhere that follows FISA). It's only you English that have to be different :-) And I still don't know what "social media" is. Maybe I'll try one of the girls (age 17) at rowing tonight and see if they know... Rob. |

Sorry Rob - I had briefly forgotten that the SARA was slightly more sensible than the English version... Nick |

Is it a long-winded way of saying "MySpace" or "FaceBook"? |
