| Ezzy sails vs Sailworks (vinyl bad??) |
Hi, I am looking at sails. I was looking at the Ezzy Freeride but someone told me that they had vinyl in them and this might be undesireable due to stretching. Is this the case? I was also looking at Sailworks retro which apparently is made of monofilm? And this doesn't tend to stretch? Could someone please weigh in and tell me what I should be looking for or if any of the above is accurate or not? Thanks, Rob |

Rob, you sure are going to stir things up. There are a lot of people who are just about nuts when it comes to sail design, especially the designers. Both sails are X-Ply, except for the windows. The Ezzy has such a small vinyl window that I can't imagine most sailors can feel the stretch, but some will say they can. The Sailworks monofilm window will eventually get brittle, but it shouldn't stretch. Naish sails have an X-Ply section with fewer threads for better visibility and Goya doesn't even bother with a window (you can see thru X-Ply) which makes sense to me. I wouldn't let window material affect my choice all that much, compared to other variables. BTW, I don't currently own any of the above. Oh my, here come the slings and arrows anyway. Crabby |

I don't think you'll ever notice any stretch in that little window nor will you feel the pea under your mattress. I've been sailing the entire Ezzy line for about 8 years and have loved every one of them. There were three of us out today on SE Waves (all have that same vinyl window) and all three were bright orange by coincidence. People probably thought we were a team of some sort. Drop an e-mail to David Ezzy if you're curious. They are wonderful sails. I've got the 2008 Freeride in 6.5 and I love it after sailing Infinities for so long. There are lots of great sails out there by lots of manufacturers these days. This is just one of them. This may add to the perception of a soft feeling sail that most may simply attribute to the window. Depends on what you like. Over here in FL, lots of people prefer a more focused pull that comes from Aerotech sails,or others'. Check Aerotechsails.com. No monofilm windows on most sails in the line. No stretchy, spongy feel from these sails. Most comparable would be the Phantom or Free Speed. Both are surf tough should you need to at least get thru some surf from time to time to sail... Retro is flat water only with the tube battens. |

Having ridden both, I prefer Retros (nothing wrong with EZZYs either). I'm typically not in surf. Retros have a locked in Center of Effort, so they don't get back handed, and a springiness that busts gusts (a spongy feeling for some). I like the way they power up (and down) smoothly, but not everybody does. The EZZYs have a very similar feel to the Retros, but I find them a little heavier feeling. You can't go wrong with either. -Craig On May 2, 1:19=A0pm, bertbarndoor <bertbarnd...@gmail.com > wrote: > Hi, I am looking at sails.
