Da Mellon's boat still for sale

B&Q/Castorama is still in East Cowes Marina (Hasn't moved for many months
now) with a 'For Sale' sign on it, still claiming to be the fastest solo
round the planet even though Joyon made that untrue last year.
That's over a year it has been up for sale, and it must be costing someone a
fortune. The Dame seems to have lost interest as she's having a new Open 60
built at the GB yard just over the river from B&Q.

If you are over 65 and buy it on a Wednesday, do you get the 10% off?

Actually, I fancy a quick flip around the world, before Gordon Brown puts a
tax on wind.

There's plenty of wind without substance in London.

No, my nautical French isn't good enough to sign on as crew. What's the
French for "we have lift-off!"

"Décollage!" (= take off)

To me, "we have lift-off!" always brings back memories of the Apollo XI
flight (almost 40 years ago). I watched with my grand-parents (my
grand-dad was born in 1890...)

onomatopoeia used to pinpoint a precise moment of time (since 1859).
"Au 4ème top, il sera 6 h" (at the 4th top, it'll be 6), as used on the
speaking clock and on French long-wave radio to broadcast time signal
every hour to ships at sea (3 short pips and a longer one)

There has to be a lower limit, surely, as to how much boat is in the water,
to qualify for these RTW record attempts?

If being in the water mattered windsurfers wouldn't hold the water speed
record.

Unlike them, however, L'hydroptère is entirely supported by the water.
The fact that the hull is a funny shape - specifically, with wing bits
on the bottom - and is entirely planing, not displacement, is surely
irrelevant.

I've tried once to hit a reasonable sized wave when speeding happily
along on a hobiecat.

One moment I'm leaning from the windward hull, safe and soundly
attached to the trapez.....

Next moment, I'm flying out in front of the darned thing, making it
roll over the bow....

Imagine that hydrosomething hits a big wave in the southern ocenan at
max speed... That cupholder got to be heavily reinforced.
