IDK Salisbury

Been good value for Warwickshire this season, first with the bat, now
with the ball. We must rush him back into the England set up
immediately!

How many English players have appeared in a test after their benefit
season?

Alan Wells perhaps might have the distinction of appearing in his
first test after his benefit (FC debut in 1981 and test debut in
1995)?

Dozens, if not hundreds.

That might well explain why he didn't play test cricket until so late
in his career.

A player normally gets his benefit about ten years after the award of
his county cap. So many will only be in their early to mid-thirties.

I'm glad to see Salisbury doing well. He may not have done well at Test
level, but he's always struck me as being a trier and a nice bloke.

It was watching Ian Salisbury that prompted me to try leg spin bowling
when I stopped keeping wicket regularly, so I am also pleased to see
him do well, especially when he plays well for Warwickshire! It
didn't last long though, once I learned to bowl a googly, I lost the
leg-spinner and couldn't get it back, so I moved onto medium pace
inswing until I got a permanent case of the yips that would amaze
Scott Boswell and I now bowl off-spin (inspired by Ashley Giles, which
suggests that being one of my inspirations is a career limiting
move ;o).

There is an obvious comment about Giles inspiring anyone to be a spinner..

No, but had you seen my inswing bowling towards the end, you might

Ian Salisbury is the worst test cricketer I have ever seen in 22 years of
watching. So bad is Ian Salisbury that he was once barracked by _his own
members_.

Eng v Sri Lanka Oval 1998. Eng got 450 odd and SL steamed ahead with 650+.
As Salisbury had been smashed all over the place, Stewart threw the ball to
Ramprakash who bowled a few tidy overs - nothing threatening but at least
accurate. One Surrey member shouted out "Are you watching, Salisbury?"
Harsh but completely fair - the bloke is garbage.

Plenty in the past., Max. Here are a few: Hirst, Rhodes (after a second
benefit as well I think -0 the Oval 1926 when he was 49 and the Windies
1929/30 when he was 52), Hobbs, Sutcliffe, Trueman, Staham, Laker,
Hayward..... RH
